In every tribute to Chaplain Bill and his memory you will probably find a great
recounting of his love for others. I am so privileged to call myself one of
those. His love did not come from him, it was an expression of the love of his Saviour
Jesus Christ, which Chaplain Bill chose to share with even the least among us
in whatever the circumstance.
This Face Warms my Heart |
To
a man who loved to love and loved to be loved. To me this was Chaplain Bill. The Chaplain, my Chaplain, was dear to more than most and so dear to me that my heart busted
with joy at just knowing he was near. Even in pictures now he captures my heart
with a sense of love and peace. He was the highlight of most of my working days
at DTS. I asked Shane what he loved most about Chaplain the other evening and top
of his list was ‘I loved how he loved you’. So did I.

He was warm enough to feel like family, wise
enough to keep quite about it and he was tough enough to tell you the truth even
though it may hurt. And he was funny!
His humor broke the monotony of quiet days
in the office. He always called around 10am on the phone when he was on his way to work and regardless of who got the
call his voice could be heard without the loud speaker 'I am zipping down 95...'. For the three and a
half years we worked together the same man, the same one-liner and it never got
old. His stories never did, his sayings never did. His body may have but he,
this incredible man, remained relevant because the love of Christ is always
relevant and spans every generation and this man loved us so very, very well.
His very last message to me that I can recall:
He called a Dallas friend to tell me that there was one thing missing at his final
staff luncheon – Katie. He knew I loved him and he wanted me to know he loved
me too. Love
lets nothing unsaid and I could not have asked for more.
This time the message is mine, there is
something missing this past week and Chaplain Bill it is you. Daisy and I
prayed and we asked God to tell you I said ‘Hello’. I am and will continue to pray for your Sweetheart and as you always told me to I will strive to 'LIVE IT UP!'
Love Always,
KaTie
